Before choosing a virtual intensive outpatient program, ask about its clinical team, weekly schedule, treatment methods, technology, crisis procedures and approach to individualized care. The right program should be able to explain not only what it offers, but also why its services fit your needs.

Knowing which questions to ask can help you choose a virtual IOP based on treatment quality rather than convenience alone.

A short admissions conversation can reveal a great deal about a program. Explore Vitalize’s Virtual IOP and bring your questions to a team prepared to answer them.

Your Virtual IOP Evaluation Checklist

  • Confirm that clinicians can legally provide care in your state.
  • Ask how many hours of treatment occur each week.
  • Learn which services are included beyond group therapy.
  • Review privacy, technology and emergency procedures.
  • Clarify costs, insurance coverage and attendance expectations.

Start With the People Providing Your Care

Ask who will lead your groups, individual sessions and psychiatric appointments. Clinicians should hold appropriate licenses or credentials for the services they provide.

Useful questions include:

  • Who oversees my treatment plan?
  • Are groups led by licensed clinicians?
  • Can your providers treat clients in my state?
  • Will I work with the same clinicians consistently?
  • How can I contact the team between sessions?

Federal telehealth guidance explains that behavioral health professionals must comply with licensing requirements where the patient is located.

Ask What Your Treatment Week Will Include

Request a sample schedule so you can understand the program’s actual intensity. A virtual IOP should involve more than an occasional online appointment.

Ask how many hours you will attend, how many days the program meets and whether the schedule includes:

  • Group therapy
  • Individual sessions
  • Family involvement
  • Psychiatric evaluations
  • Medication management
  • Mental health education
  • Discharge planning

Vitalize’s Virtual IOP offers structured evening care for California adults who need more support than standard weekly therapy.

Find Out How Care Becomes Personal

Ask how the program creates and updates individualized treatment plans. Group therapy may be central to IOP, but each participant should still have personal goals based on symptoms, functioning and treatment history.

Questions worth asking include:

  • How will you assess my needs?
  • How often is my treatment plan reviewed?
  • How do you measure progress?
  • What happens if I am not improving?
  • Can care be adjusted as my needs change?

Vitalize may also coordinate psychiatric and medication management when medication is part of the plan.

Privacy Questions Matter More Online

Ask which video platform the program uses and what steps protect confidential health information. You should also understand what is expected of you, such as attending from a private room or using headphones.

Federal guidance emphasizes informed consent and privacy protections when behavioral health care is delivered through telehealth.

What Happens If a Crisis Occurs at Home?

A strong virtual program should have a clear emergency plan. Ask what happens if you become unsafe, lose your internet connection during a crisis or need care beyond what virtual IOP can provide.

The program may ask for your physical location, a nearby emergency contact and information about local crisis services. Federal telebehavioral health guidance recommends establishing these procedures before treatment begins.

Also ask how clinicians determine when someone should transition to in-person, residential or hospital care.

Clarify the Practical Details Before Enrolling

Confirm costs and participation requirements before committing to a program. Ask:

  • Does the program accept my insurance?
  • What will I owe out of pocket?
  • What technology do I need?
  • What is the attendance policy?
  • Can I participate while traveling?
  • How are missed sessions handled?
  • When are family sessions scheduled?

You may also want to compare virtual care with Vitalize’s broader mental health treatment options

Listen to How the Program Answers

The quality of the answers matters as much as the services being described. Staff should answer clearly, acknowledge limitations and explain how they determine whether virtual treatment is appropriate.

Avoid choosing a program solely because it offers the fastest enrollment or most convenient schedule. Clinical fit, safety and individualized support matter more.

Bring this checklist to your conversation with Vitalize Behavioral Health and decide whether its virtual program offers the structure, expertise and support you need.

Clinical Director

I am a client-centered and ACT-focused clinician with a significant history working with children and adolescents. I deeply believe that therapy needs to be driven by the people we are working with, in order to achieve their own unique goals and personal ideals in regards to what they want their lives to be.

Areas of Specialization

  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • LGBTQ+
  • Children and Adolescents

Therapeutic Approach

I was trained as a person centered therapist through my graduate program and quickly gravitated towards acceptance and commitment therapy, which is a third wave behavioral therapy that focuses on acceptance of emotions and thoughts, coping effectively and committing to living our lives by our own values and ideals. I also utilize play therapy with younger clients that allows them to explore and process their emotions and struggles through a developmentally appropriate process. What clients can expect more than anything else is receiving therapy that is tailored to their needs. This would include exploring what gets in the way of them living how they want in a deep, meaningful way, developing skills and strategies that are tailored to their experience, and moving in a significant way towards the behaviors and goals they desire for themselves.

Education and Credentials

  • B.A. Psychology
  • M.S. Counseling
  • Marriage Family and Child Counseling, LMFT
  • Trained in Affirmative Therapy, Trauma-Informed Care, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

About Me

Primarily I gravitated towards becoming a therapist as I grew up with family members who needed mental health care in significant ways and I saw first hand how good, quality care benefitted them. I also attended therapy as a child and teenager and will be forever grateful that I saw competent, ethical therapists. Beyond that I am also a lifelong athlete who has seen the benefits of sports and meaningful experiences on people’s lives. I have been a whitewater river raft guide for the past 15 years and have worked on the Kings River and the American River.

I became a therapist after starting my work as an emergency response advocate, where I supported individuals and families during some of their most difficult moments. Over time, I realized my true calling was in helping people not just survive those experiences, but heal from them, and that’s what led me to the deeper, ongoing work of therapy.
