How Do You Know If Your Teen Needs More Than Weekly Therapy?

Your teen may need more than weekly therapy when mental health symptoms are becoming more intense, interfering with school or relationships, creating safety concerns, or making it difficult to function between appointments. Weekly counseling can be helpful for many teens, but sometimes a young person needs more frequent support, additional structure, or a treatment team that can address several needs at once.

For families looking for teen mental health treatment in Fresno, Vitalize Behavioral Health offers different levels of care based on what a teen is experiencing and how much support they need.

If your teen may benefit from more frequent mental health support, talk with Vitalize about available levels of care.

Signs to Pay Attention To

  • Symptoms continue getting worse despite regular therapy.
  • Your teen struggles significantly between weekly appointments.
  • School attendance or performance has changed.
  • Relationships with friends or family are becoming increasingly difficult.
  • Anxiety, depression, or emotional outbursts are disrupting everyday life.
  • There are concerns about self-harm, suicidal thoughts, substance use, or other risky behaviors.

When Is Weekly Therapy No Longer Enough?

There is no single symptom that automatically means a teen needs a higher level of care. Instead, parents and providers often look at the overall pattern.

Maybe your teen attends therapy every week but spends most of the time between sessions struggling to use the strategies they are learning. They may be missing school, isolating themselves, having frequent emotional outbursts, or finding it increasingly difficult to participate in everyday activities.

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry explains that children and teens with serious emotional or behavioral difficulties may benefit from an intensive outpatient program (IOP) or partial hospitalization program (PHP) when once-weekly counseling does not provide enough support but 24-hour hospitalization is not necessary.

What Does a Higher Level of Care Provide?

More structured treatment gives teens additional opportunities to practice coping skills, receive clinical support, and address challenges as they arise.

An IOP typically provides treatment for several hours on multiple days each week while allowing a teen to continue living at home. Vitalize’s Child & Adolescent IOP is designed for ages 9–17 and supports concerns including anxiety, depression, school refusal, trauma, self-harm urges, social difficulties, and challenges managing intense emotions.

When symptoms require even more daytime structure, a PHP may be considered. Vitalize provides both IOP and PHP within its continuum of care for teens.

How Do You Know Which Program Your Teen Needs?

Parents aren’t expected to make that determination alone.

A mental health assessment can look at your teen’s symptoms, safety, functioning at home and school, treatment history, family needs, and current support system. From there, a clinician can recommend the level of care that makes the most sense.

Vitalize’s adolescent IOP and PHP programs also involve families in treatment and focus on helping teens use new skills at home, at school, and in everyday relationships.

More Support Can Be the Next Step

Needing more than weekly therapy does not mean treatment has failed. A teen’s needs can change, and adjusting the amount of support they receive can be part of finding what works.

If you are unsure whether your teen needs more structured teen mental health treatment in Fresno, contact Vitalize Behavioral Health to talk with the team about what you are seeing and what level of care may fit.

Clinical Director

I am a client-centered and ACT-focused clinician with a significant history working with children and adolescents. I deeply believe that therapy needs to be driven by the people we are working with, in order to achieve their own unique goals and personal ideals in regards to what they want their lives to be.

Areas of Specialization

  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • LGBTQ+
  • Children and Adolescents

Therapeutic Approach

I was trained as a person centered therapist through my graduate program and quickly gravitated towards acceptance and commitment therapy, which is a third wave behavioral therapy that focuses on acceptance of emotions and thoughts, coping effectively and committing to living our lives by our own values and ideals. I also utilize play therapy with younger clients that allows them to explore and process their emotions and struggles through a developmentally appropriate process. What clients can expect more than anything else is receiving therapy that is tailored to their needs. This would include exploring what gets in the way of them living how they want in a deep, meaningful way, developing skills and strategies that are tailored to their experience, and moving in a significant way towards the behaviors and goals they desire for themselves.

Education and Credentials

  • B.A. Psychology
  • M.S. Counseling
  • Marriage Family and Child Counseling, LMFT
  • Trained in Affirmative Therapy, Trauma-Informed Care, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

About Me

Primarily I gravitated towards becoming a therapist as I grew up with family members who needed mental health care in significant ways and I saw first hand how good, quality care benefitted them. I also attended therapy as a child and teenager and will be forever grateful that I saw competent, ethical therapists. Beyond that I am also a lifelong athlete who has seen the benefits of sports and meaningful experiences on people’s lives. I have been a whitewater river raft guide for the past 15 years and have worked on the Kings River and the American River.

I became a therapist after starting my work as an emergency response advocate, where I supported individuals and families during some of their most difficult moments. Over time, I realized my true calling was in helping people not just survive those experiences, but heal from them, and that’s what led me to the deeper, ongoing work of therapy.
