Progress in mental health treatment isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it looks like fewer overwhelming days. Sometimes it’s getting through a difficult situation without reacting the way you normally would. Sometimes it’s simply noticing what’s happening sooner and knowing which coping skill to use.

That’s why how to know if therapy is working isn’t always answered by asking whether every symptom has disappeared. In a structured program like Virtual IOP, progress is usually looked at over time and in more than one area of life.

Want to understand how progress is tracked in treatment? Contact Vitalize Behavioral Health to learn more about Virtual IOP and how your care plan is reviewed along the way.

What Does Progress in Therapy Look Like?

The goals of treatment will look different for everyone.

Someone beginning Virtual IOP because anxiety is interfering with work may be working toward getting through the workday with fewer disruptions. Someone struggling with depression may be focused on getting back into routines, sleeping more consistently, or reconnecting with people and activities they’ve pulled away from.

The American Psychological Association recommends establishing clear goals early in therapy and regularly asking whether treatment makes sense and whether progress is happening. APA also notes that improvement can show up in areas such as relationships, emotional expression, work or school functioning, and the ability to use healthier behaviors.

Those changes may happen gradually rather than all at once.

How Do Providers Track Progress in IOP?

In a structured program, your treatment team has more opportunities to see how you’re doing than they would during a single weekly appointment.

Progress may be reviewed through conversations with your clinicians, changes in symptoms, treatment goals, your ability to use coping skills, and how you’re functioning outside of sessions.

APA describes this kind of ongoing progress monitoring as a way for clinicians to see whether treatment is working and make adjustments when needed.

At Vitalize, treatment is individualized rather than following exactly the same plan for everyone. Approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy also give participants practical skills they can begin applying between sessions.

What If You’re Improving but Still Having Hard Days?

A difficult day doesn’t necessarily mean treatment has stopped working.

Progress can be uneven. You may handle one stressful situation differently while still struggling with another. Symptoms may become less intense or easier to recover from before they disappear completely.

It can help to look at patterns over several weeks. Are you recovering from difficult moments faster? Are you noticing triggers earlier? Are you using skills outside of treatment? Is it getting easier to complete everyday responsibilities or ask for help?

Those changes can matter even when there’s still more work to do.

If progress feels stalled or symptoms are getting worse, bring that up with your treatment team. It may be a sign that the treatment plan needs to change or that a different level of care should be considered.

If you’re looking for structured treatment with regular opportunities to review your progress, contact Vitalize Behavioral Health to talk with the team about Virtual IOP and your next steps.

Background and Experience

Prior to joining Vitalize Behavioral Health, I gained valuable experience working with individuals experiencing a wide range of mental health concerns across diverse clinical settings. Clinical Director

I am a client-centered and ACT-focused clinician with a significant history working with children and adolescents. I deeply believe that therapy needs to be driven by the people we are working with, in order to achieve their own unique goals and personal ideals in regards to what they want their lives to be.

Areas of Specialization

  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • LGBTQ+
  • Children and Adolescents

Therapeutic Approach

I was trained as a person centered therapist through my graduate program and quickly gravitated towards acceptance and commitment therapy, which is a third wave behavioral therapy that focuses on acceptance of emotions and thoughts, coping effectively and committing to living our lives by our own values and ideals. I also utilize play therapy with younger clients that allows them to explore and process their emotions and struggles through a developmentally appropriate process. What clients can expect more than anything else is receiving therapy that is tailored to their needs. This would include exploring what gets in the way of them living how they want in a deep, meaningful way, developing skills and strategies that are tailored to their experience, and moving in a significant way towards the behaviors and goals they desire for themselves.

Education and Credentials

  • B.A. Psychology
  • M.S. Counseling
  • Marriage Family and Child Counseling, LMFT
  • Trained in Affirmative Therapy, Trauma-Informed Care, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

About Me

Primarily I gravitated towards becoming a therapist as I grew up with family members who needed mental health care in significant ways and I saw first hand how good, quality care benefitted them. I also attended therapy as a child and teenager and will be forever grateful that I saw competent, ethical therapists. Beyond that I am also a lifelong athlete who has seen the benefits of sports and meaningful experiences on people’s lives. I have been a whitewater river raft guide for the past 15 years and have worked on the Kings River and the American River.

REGIONAL CLINICAL DIRECTOR

As the Regional Clinical Director of the Adult IOP/PHP program, I bring over three years of experience in intensive outpatient care and six years in crisis intervention and emergency response alongside law enforcement. My clinical work is grounded in a psychodynamic approach through a trauma-informed lens, with a focus on helping clients understand how their past informs their present functioning. I became a therapist after starting my work as an emergency response advocate, where I supported individuals and families during some of their most difficult moments. Over time, I realized my true calling was in helping people not just survive those experiences, but heal from them, and that’s what led me to the deeper, ongoing work of therapy.
