An intensive outpatient program usually requires about nine to 15 hours of treatment each week, divided across several days. The exact schedule depends on the program, the client’s needs, and whether sessions are offered during the day or evening.

This structure provides more support than weekly therapy while allowing participants to continue living at home and managing work, school, or family responsibilities. For people considering an intensive outpatient program in Fresno, understanding the time commitment can make treatment feel easier to plan for.

See how structured care can fit into your week by exploring Vitalize’s current IOP schedule options.

The IOP Schedule in Five Key Points

  • IOP commonly meets three to five days each week.
  • Each treatment block may last about three hours.
  • Programs combine group therapy with individual and psychiatric support.
  • Flexible schedules can help accommodate work, school, and caregiving.
  • Consistent attendance is essential to receiving the full benefit of treatment.

How Many Hours Does IOP Usually Require?

IOP usually requires several hours of treatment on three to five days each week. Some programs meet for approximately three hours per session, creating a total weekly commitment of around nine to 15 hours.

Vitalize’s Intensive Outpatient Program provides structured support while allowing participants to remain connected to their regular routines. The exact schedule may vary based on clinical recommendations, program format, and current availability.

What Happens During Those Hours?

IOP hours are used for structured therapy, education, skill-building, and clinical support. A typical week may include:

  • Clinician-led group therapy
  • Individual therapy
  • Family sessions when appropriate
  • Medication management or psychiatric care
  • Coping-skills education
  • Emotional regulation and stress-management practice
  • Treatment planning and progress reviews

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, intensive outpatient care can combine individual appointments, group sessions, and education about coping skills.

Can You Attend IOP While Working or Going to School?

Many people can attend IOP while continuing to work, study, or care for their families. Morning, afternoon, evening, and virtual options can make the program easier to fit around existing commitments.

Vitalize’s Virtual IOP offers evening programming for California adults who need structured treatment without a daytime commute. Regardless of the format, participants should protect their scheduled treatment hours and avoid trying to work or multitask during sessions.

Why Does IOP Meet More Than Once a Week?

IOP meets several times per week because frequent support helps clients address challenges as they happen. Instead of waiting a full week to discuss a difficult situation, participants can process it sooner, receive feedback, and practice a healthier response.

Repeated skill practice can also help clients build:

  • Stronger coping strategies
  • Better emotional regulation
  • Greater awareness of triggers
  • Healthier communication
  • More consistent daily routines

The schedule creates accountability and momentum without requiring overnight care.

How Long Do People Remain in IOP?

People remain in IOP for different lengths of time based on their symptoms, participation, progress, and treatment goals. Some may attend for several weeks, while others need a longer period of structured support.

The treatment team regularly reviews progress and adjusts the plan as needed. A client may eventually step down to weekly therapy or move to a higher level of care, such as PHP, if symptoms require additional support.

How Can You Find the Right IOP Schedule?

You can find the right schedule by completing an assessment and discussing your responsibilities with the admissions team. Clinicians consider both your mental health needs and your ability to attend consistently before recommending a program.

An IOP schedule should be manageable, but it should also provide enough structure to support meaningful progress.

Clinical Director

I am a client-centered and ACT-focused clinician with a significant history working with children and adolescents. I deeply believe that therapy needs to be driven by the people we are working with, in order to achieve their own unique goals and personal ideals in regards to what they want their lives to be.

Areas of Specialization

  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • LGBTQ+
  • Children and Adolescents

Therapeutic Approach

I was trained as a person centered therapist through my graduate program and quickly gravitated towards acceptance and commitment therapy, which is a third wave behavioral therapy that focuses on acceptance of emotions and thoughts, coping effectively and committing to living our lives by our own values and ideals. I also utilize play therapy with younger clients that allows them to explore and process their emotions and struggles through a developmentally appropriate process. What clients can expect more than anything else is receiving therapy that is tailored to their needs. This would include exploring what gets in the way of them living how they want in a deep, meaningful way, developing skills and strategies that are tailored to their experience, and moving in a significant way towards the behaviors and goals they desire for themselves.

Education and Credentials

  • B.A. Psychology
  • M.S. Counseling
  • Marriage Family and Child Counseling, LMFT
  • Trained in Affirmative Therapy, Trauma-Informed Care, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

About Me

Primarily I gravitated towards becoming a therapist as I grew up with family members who needed mental health care in significant ways and I saw first hand how good, quality care benefitted them. I also attended therapy as a child and teenager and will be forever grateful that I saw competent, ethical therapists. Beyond that I am also a lifelong athlete who has seen the benefits of sports and meaningful experiences on people’s lives. I have been a whitewater river raft guide for the past 15 years and have worked on the Kings River and the American River.

I became a therapist after starting my work as an emergency response advocate, where I supported individuals and families during some of their most difficult moments.
