One of the first questions people have about intensive outpatient treatment is how much time it actually takes.

If you’re trying to balance work, school, family, or other responsibilities, that matters. A virtual intensive outpatient program is more structured than weekly therapy, but it’s still designed to let you continue living at home and managing much of your regular routine.

At Vitalize Behavioral Health, Virtual IOP typically includes about three sessions per week, with each session lasting around three hours. That comes to roughly nine hours of scheduled group programming each week, plus a weekly individual check-in with a clinician.

See what Virtual IOP looks like at Vitalize and how treatment is built into the week.

How Many Hours Is Intensive Outpatient Treatment?

There isn’t one universal schedule for every IOP. Hours can vary depending on the program, the person’s needs, and the type of treatment being provided.

In general, intensive outpatient care involves several hours of treatment across multiple days each week. Medicare describes intensive outpatient programs as a level of care between traditional weekly therapy and more intensive psychiatric treatment, with eligible care plans requiring at least nine hours of therapeutic services per week.

That additional time gives people more frequent contact with their treatment team and more opportunities to learn and practice skills between sessions. At Vitalize, Virtual IOP generally follows a similar nine-hour weekly structure, with three-hour sessions held three days per week.

How Are Those Hours Spread Across the Week?

At Vitalize, Virtual IOP generally runs about three days each week for three hours at a time. Participants join live video sessions with the same small group, giving them consistent time to work on CBT and DBT skills, process what they’re experiencing, and practice new coping strategies.

Adults in Vitalize’s in-person IOP follow a similar structure, with programming offered about three days per week for three hours at a time.

A schedule like this can provide more continuity than weekly therapy without requiring someone to spend the entire day in treatment.

Can You Still Work While Attending Virtual IOP?

For many people, yes.

Vitalize offers evening Virtual IOP sessions from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Pacific Time for adults across California, which can make treatment easier to fit around a traditional workday.

Of course, every person’s schedule and clinical needs are different. During the intake process, the treatment team can help determine whether IOP is the right level of care and whether the available schedule works with your everyday responsibilities.

You can also explore Vitalize’s other levels of outpatient care if you’re comparing different treatment options.

Background and Experience

Prior to joining Vitalize Behavioral Health, I gained valuable experience working with individuals experiencing a wide range of mental health concerns across diverse clinical settings. Clinical Director

I am a client-centered and ACT-focused clinician with a significant history working with children and adolescents. I deeply believe that therapy needs to be driven by the people we are working with, in order to achieve their own unique goals and personal ideals in regards to what they want their lives to be.

Therapeutic Approach

I was trained as a person centered therapist through my graduate program and quickly gravitated towards acceptance and commitment therapy, which is a third wave behavioral therapy that focuses on acceptance of emotions and thoughts, coping effectively and committing to living our lives by our own values and ideals. I also utilize play therapy with younger clients that allows them to explore and process their emotions and struggles through a developmentally appropriate process. What clients can expect more than anything else is receiving therapy that is tailored to their needs. This would include exploring what gets in the way of them living how they want in a deep, meaningful way, developing skills and strategies that are tailored to their experience, and moving in a significant way towards the behaviors and goals they desire for themselves.

About Me

Primarily I gravitated towards becoming a therapist as I grew up with family members who needed mental health care in significant ways and I saw first hand how good, quality care benefitted them. I also attended therapy as a child and teenager and will be forever grateful that I saw competent, ethical therapists. Beyond that I am also a lifelong athlete who has seen the benefits of sports and meaningful experiences on people’s lives. I have been a whitewater river raft guide for the past 15 years and have worked on the Kings River and the American River.

REGIONAL CLINICAL DIRECTOR

As the Regional Clinical Director of the Adult IOP/PHP program, I bring over three years of experience in intensive outpatient care and six years in crisis intervention and emergency response alongside law enforcement. My clinical work is grounded in a psychodynamic approach through a trauma-informed lens, with a focus on helping clients understand how their past informs their present functioning. I became a therapist after starting my work as an emergency response advocate, where I supported individuals and families during some of their most difficult moments. Over time, I realized my true calling was in helping people not just survive those experiences, but heal from them, and that’s what led me to the deeper, ongoing work of therapy.
