Can an Intensive Outpatient Program Help With Anxiety and Depression?

Yes, an intensive outpatient program can help people manage anxiety and depression when symptoms require more support than occasional therapy

Yes, an intensive outpatient program can help people manage anxiety and depression when symptoms require more support than occasional therapy provides. IOP offers frequent treatment while allowing participants to continue living at home and maintaining many everyday responsibilities.

An IOP for anxiety and depression may be appropriate when symptoms disrupt work, school, relationships, sleep, or self-care but don’t require round-the-clock supervision.

You don’t have to wait for your symptoms to become a crisis. Explore whether Vitalize’s structured outpatient care could give you more consistent support today.

The Essential Points

  • IOP provides several hours of treatment on multiple days each week.
  • Therapy can address anxious thoughts, low mood, avoidance, and isolation.
  • Group sessions create opportunities to practice skills with peer support.
  • Psychiatric care may be incorporated when medication is appropriate.
  • The right level of care depends on symptoms, safety, and daily functioning.

When Anxiety Starts Shrinking Your World

Anxiety may require more intensive support when fear, worry, or panic begins limiting everyday life. Someone may avoid driving, social situations, work responsibilities, appointments, or unfamiliar environments because those experiences feel overwhelming.

The American Psychiatric Association identifies psychotherapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, as a first-line treatment for many anxiety disorders. In IOP, participants can practice coping strategies repeatedly instead of waiting a full week to discuss what happened.

When Depression Makes Daily Life Feel Unmanageable

Depression may point to a need for IOP when low mood, exhaustion, hopelessness, or loss of interest consistently interferes with functioning. Basic tasks such as getting out of bed, eating regularly, completing assignments, or responding to loved ones may become difficult.

What Happens When Both Conditions Show Up Together?

When anxiety and depression occur together, each condition can reinforce the other. Anxiety may lead someone to avoid activities, while depression can reduce the motivation needed to reengage. Over time, this cycle may increase isolation, guilt, and emotional exhaustion.

Vitalize’s Intensive Outpatient Program allows the treatment team to address overlapping symptoms within one coordinated plan rather than treating every struggle as a separate issue.

Why Can More Frequent Treatment Make a Difference?

More frequent treatment creates repetition, accountability, and timely opportunities to work through challenges. Participants can learn a skill, apply it at home, and return to discuss what helped or what got in the way.

IOP may combine:

  • Group therapy
  • Individual sessions
  • Psychiatric care
  • Medication management
  • Family involvement
  • Education about symptoms and coping
  • Safety or relapse-prevention planning

What Skills Can You Practice in IOP?

IOP helps participants practice responding differently to distressing thoughts, emotions, and situations. Depending on the treatment approach, clients may work on grounding, emotional regulation, communication, problem-solving, behavioral activation, and reducing avoidance.

Group therapy can also challenge the isolation that often accompanies anxiety and depression. Participants can hear different perspectives, recognize shared experiences, and practice new skills in a supportive setting.

Those who need flexible access may also explore Vitalize’s Virtual IOP, which brings structured treatment into the home.

Is IOP the Right Next Step?

IOP may be the right next step when weekly care is not producing enough stability but hospitalization is not necessary. A clinical assessment should consider symptom intensity, safety, previous treatment, available support, and the ability to participate consistently.

Someone facing an immediate safety concern may need emergency or inpatient care instead. Others may be better served by partial hospitalization or another Vitalize service

Build Momentum With the Right Support

Anxiety and depression can make progress feel distant, but treatment does not have to happen one hour at a time. The additional structure of IOP can help participants practice healthier responses, rebuild routines, and move forward with greater support.

Clinical Director

I am a client-centered and ACT-focused clinician with a significant history working with children and adolescents. I deeply believe that therapy needs to be driven by the people we are working with, in order to achieve their own unique goals and personal ideals in regards to what they want their lives to be.

Areas of Specialization

  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • LGBTQ+
  • Children and Adolescents

Therapeutic Approach

I was trained as a person centered therapist through my graduate program and quickly gravitated towards acceptance and commitment therapy, which is a third wave behavioral therapy that focuses on acceptance of emotions and thoughts, coping effectively and committing to living our lives by our own values and ideals. I also utilize play therapy with younger clients that allows them to explore and process their emotions and struggles through a developmentally appropriate process. What clients can expect more than anything else is receiving therapy that is tailored to their needs. This would include exploring what gets in the way of them living how they want in a deep, meaningful way, developing skills and strategies that are tailored to their experience, and moving in a significant way towards the behaviors and goals they desire for themselves.

Education and Credentials

  • B.A. Psychology
  • M.S. Counseling
  • Marriage Family and Child Counseling, LMFT
  • Trained in Affirmative Therapy, Trauma-Informed Care, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

About Me

Primarily I gravitated towards becoming a therapist as I grew up with family members who needed mental health care in significant ways and I saw first hand how good, quality care benefitted them. I also attended therapy as a child and teenager and will be forever grateful that I saw competent, ethical therapists. Beyond that I am also a lifelong athlete who has seen the benefits of sports and meaningful experiences on people’s lives. I have been a whitewater river raft guide for the past 15 years and have worked on the Kings River and the American River.

My clinical work is grounded in a psychodynamic approach through a trauma-informed lens, with a focus on helping clients understand how their past informs their present functioning. I became a therapist after starting my work as an emergency response advocate, where I supported individuals and families during some of their most difficult moments. Over time, I realized my true calling was in helping people not just survive those experiences, but heal from them, and that’s what led me to the deeper, ongoing work of therapy.
