How Does a Teen’s IOP Schedule Work Alongside School?

When a teen needs more mental health support, parents may worry that intensive treatment means putting school completely on hold.

When a teen needs more mental health support, parents may worry that intensive treatment means putting school completely on hold. In many cases, an intensive outpatient program is specifically structured so teens can continue attending school while receiving several hours of treatment throughout the week.

At Vitalize Behavioral Health, the teen IOP and school schedule are designed to work alongside each other. Programming takes place in the afternoon, giving teens time to attend school before coming to treatment.

Trying to balance your teen’s mental health needs with school? Contact Vitalize Behavioral Health to ask about adolescent IOP scheduling and available support.

Can a Teen Go to School While Attending IOP?

Yes. Unlike inpatient treatment or some more intensive daytime programs, IOP doesn’t usually require a teen to spend the entire day in treatment.

Vitalize’s Child & Adolescent IOP generally meets three afternoons per week for about three hours at a time. The teen track serves ages 13–17 and is scheduled after school, allowing participants to maintain their school routine while receiving additional mental health support.

This type of scheduling is common in adolescent IOP. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry explains that IOPs for children and adolescents may meet two to four days each week, often after school so young people can continue attending classes.

What Happens During Those Afternoon Hours?

After the school day, teens transition into several hours of structured treatment.

At Vitalize, adolescent IOP includes small-group therapy along with individual support and skills based on approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy.

Treatment can give teens a place to work on challenges that may also be showing up at school, including anxiety, difficulty managing emotions, stress, relationships, or trouble coping when things feel overwhelming.

Having treatment at predictable times each week can also make it easier for families to plan transportation, homework, extracurricular activities, and other responsibilities around the program.

What If Mental Health Is Already Affecting School?

Sometimes the reason a teen needs IOP is also the reason school has become difficult.

Symptoms may be affecting attendance, concentration, grades, relationships, or a teen’s ability to make it through the school day. In those situations, simply scheduling treatment after school may not address every challenge they’re facing.

Parents can talk with the treatment team about what’s happening academically and whether additional coordination or support may be helpful. Depending on the teen’s needs, families may also need to communicate with the school or other outside providers.

For teens who need more support during the day, Vitalize also offers an Adolescent PHP, which provides a more intensive treatment schedule.

The goal is to find a level of care that supports a teen’s mental health while considering the rest of their life, including school.

Have questions about fitting treatment into your teen’s school week? Contact Vitalize Behavioral Health to discuss scheduling and adolescent treatment options with the team.

Clinical Director

I am a client-centered and ACT-focused clinician with a significant history working with children and adolescents. I deeply believe that therapy needs to be driven by the people we are working with, in order to achieve their own unique goals and personal ideals in regards to what they want their lives to be.

Areas of Specialization

  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • LGBTQ+
  • Children and Adolescents

Therapeutic Approach

I was trained as a person centered therapist through my graduate program and quickly gravitated towards acceptance and commitment therapy, which is a third wave behavioral therapy that focuses on acceptance of emotions and thoughts, coping effectively and committing to living our lives by our own values and ideals. I also utilize play therapy with younger clients that allows them to explore and process their emotions and struggles through a developmentally appropriate process. What clients can expect more than anything else is receiving therapy that is tailored to their needs. This would include exploring what gets in the way of them living how they want in a deep, meaningful way, developing skills and strategies that are tailored to their experience, and moving in a significant way towards the behaviors and goals they desire for themselves.

Education and Credentials

  • B.A. Psychology
  • M.S. Counseling
  • Marriage Family and Child Counseling, LMFT
  • Trained in Affirmative Therapy, Trauma-Informed Care, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

About Me

Primarily I gravitated towards becoming a therapist as I grew up with family members who needed mental health care in significant ways and I saw first hand how good, quality care benefitted them. I also attended therapy as a child and teenager and will be forever grateful that I saw competent, ethical therapists. Beyond that I am also a lifelong athlete who has seen the benefits of sports and meaningful experiences on people’s lives. I have been a whitewater river raft guide for the past 15 years and have worked on the Kings River and the American River.

I became a therapist after starting my work as an emergency response advocate, where I supported individuals and families during some of their most difficult moments.
