Online therapy has made mental health care much easier to access from home. But if you’ve heard about virtual intensive outpatient programs, you may be wondering what makes them any different from a regular teletherapy appointment.
The biggest difference is the amount and structure of support. Weekly online therapy typically involves meeting one-on-one with a therapist for a scheduled session. A virtual intensive outpatient program (IOP) provides several hours of structured treatment throughout the week, often combining group therapy, individual support, skill-building, and other services.
If weekly therapy doesn’t feel like enough support right now, Vitalize’s Virtual IOP can provide more structured care without requiring you to leave home.
What Does a Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program Look Like?
A virtual IOP falls within outpatient mental health care, meaning you continue living at home while participating in treatment. Unlike a weekly therapy appointment, though, treatment takes up several hours across multiple days.
At Vitalize, Virtual IOP participants typically attend about three sessions each week, with each session lasting around three hours. Sessions happen live over video with a small group, and participants also have weekly one-on-one time with a clinician.
That added time allows treatment to go beyond talking through what happened during the week. Participants can learn and practice skills based on approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), connect with others in group therapy, and work more consistently toward their treatment goals.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) describes intensive outpatient care as a more coordinated form of outpatient treatment that can include individual appointments, group sessions, and coping-skills education.
When Might Someone Need More Than Weekly Online Therapy?
Weekly online therapy can be a good fit for many people. There may also be times when symptoms are affecting daily life enough that meeting once a week no longer feels like enough.
Someone might consider a higher level of care if they’re struggling to manage symptoms between appointments, need more opportunities to practice coping skills, or are transitioning out of a more intensive treatment setting.
An IOP provides that additional structure while still allowing people to maintain much of their normal routine. Vitalize’s virtual program, for example, offers evening sessions so adults can continue working, caring for family, or handling other daytime responsibilities.
Because the program is virtual, adults can participate from home throughout California rather than commuting to an in-person IOP or PHP program.
Is Virtual IOP the Right Level of Care for You?
No need to figure that out by yourself.
Before beginning a program, a clinical team can look at your current symptoms, safety, treatment history, daily responsibilities, and the amount of support you need. From there, they can recommend an appropriate level of care, whether that’s traditional outpatient therapy, IOP, PHP, or another option.
The format may be online, but virtual IOP is still structured mental health treatment with regular interaction with a care team.
