Why Family Involvement Matters in IOP: Healing the Whole System

When a loved one starts an intensive outpatient program (IOP), it’s normal for families to feel uncertain about their role.

When a loved one starts an intensive outpatient program (IOP), it’s normal for families to feel uncertain about their role. You might wonder how much to get involved, what to say, or whether stepping back would be more helpful. The truth? Your presence and participation can make all the difference in your loved one’s recovery journey.

At Vitalize Behavioral Health, our approach to IOP for families in Fresno goes beyond individual sessions. We work with the entire family system—parents, spouses, siblings—to rebuild trust, strengthen communication, and create a supportive foundation for healing.

Your loved one doesn’t have to recover alone—find the family support and guidance you need at Vitalize Behavioral Health today

Why Family Involvement Matters

When someone is struggling with mental health or substance use, it affects everyone around them. The constant worry, shifting family dynamics, and emotional strain can take a toll on the entire household. That’s why family involvement is such a vital part of the treatment process in an intensive outpatient program (IOP)—because healing works best when it happens together.

At Vitalize Behavioral Health, we invite families into the conversation from the very beginning. Through family therapy and ongoing education, we help parents and loved ones learn how to respond with empathy, consistency, and practical strategies that support recovery and everyday life at home.

How Family Involvement Works in IOP

In our IOP, families don’t just sit on the sidelines—they actively participate in the recovery process. Here’s what that looks like:

  • Family Therapy Sessions: Guided conversations in a safe space where parents and teens can express concerns, practice open communication, and work through conflict.
  • Educational Workshops: Learn about mental health treatment, enabling behaviors, and how to replace them with practical support that encourages independence.
  • Support Groups: Connect with other family members walking a similar path, share experiences, and gain strength from a strong support system.
  • Family Support Groups: Build understanding of how to support recovery, handle natural consequences, and maintain a supportive home environment after IOP.
  • Ongoing Guidance: The clinical expertise of our team ensures every family has the tools to sustain recovery progress and continue the healing process at home.

These steps aren’t just about your loved one—they’re about the family’s future and long-term recovery success for everyone involved.

What Families Learn Through IOP

Many families discover that by participating in family therapy sessions and group therapy, they not only help their loved one but also improve their own mental health. Here’s what we often see:

  • Improved Communication: Families develop stronger communication skills and healthier ways to talk about feelings and boundaries.
  • Healthy Boundaries: Parents and partners learn to set limits that protect the household and prevent enabling behaviors.
  • Emotional Support: Loved ones feel safer sharing emotions, knowing they have a support system that listens and responds with empathy.
  • New Coping Skills: Families gain tools to handle stress, conflict, and triggers together.
  • Sustainable Support: Everyone learns how to maintain sustainable recovery through accountability and teamwork.

Over time, these changes can help reduce relapse risk, rebuild family relationships, and create a more stable, supportive environment for long-term recovery.

The Role of Family in the Recovery Process

In an IOP, recovery is a collaborative effort. While clients attend group sessions, individual therapy, etc. to work on coping skills and emotional regulation, families learn alongside them. They discover how to balance daily responsibilities with family support, practice communication strategies, and develop new coping skills for their own well-being.

This team approach helps both the individual and their loved ones support sobriety, promote accountability, and build confidence throughout the healing process. When everyone understands their family roles, the home becomes a supportive environment where lasting change is possible.

A Message to Families

If the recovery journey feels uncertain, remember—you don’t have to have it all figured out. Simply showing up, asking questions, and staying engaged demonstrates genuine care and commitment. Many families who take an active role in their teen’s or partner’s IOP experience say they feel less guilt, more confidence, and a deeper sense of connection as they watch their family member make progress.

At Vitalize Behavioral Health, we believe family involvement can transform not just treatment outcomes but family healing as a whole.

Clinical Director

I am a client-centered and ACT-focused clinician with a significant history working with children and adolescents. I deeply believe that therapy needs to be driven by the people we are working with, in order to achieve their own unique goals and personal ideals in regards to what they want their lives to be.

Areas of Specialization

  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • LGBTQ+
  • Children and Adolescents

Therapeutic Approach

I was trained as a person centered therapist through my graduate program and quickly gravitated towards acceptance and commitment therapy, which is a third wave behavioral therapy that focuses on acceptance of emotions and thoughts, coping effectively and committing to living our lives by our own values and ideals. I also utilize play therapy with younger clients that allows them to explore and process their emotions and struggles through a developmentally appropriate process. What clients can expect more than anything else is receiving therapy that is tailored to their needs. This would include exploring what gets in the way of them living how they want in a deep, meaningful way, developing skills and strategies that are tailored to their experience, and moving in a significant way towards the behaviors and goals they desire for themselves.

Education and Credentials

  • B.A. Psychology
  • M.S. Counseling
  • Marriage Family and Child Counseling, LMFT
  • Trained in Affirmative Therapy, Trauma-Informed Care, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

About Me

Primarily I gravitated towards becoming a therapist as I grew up with family members who needed mental health care in significant ways and I saw first hand how good, quality care benefitted them. I also attended therapy as a child and teenager and will be forever grateful that I saw competent, ethical therapists. Beyond that I am also a lifelong athlete who has seen the benefits of sports and meaningful experiences on people’s lives. I have been a whitewater river raft guide for the past 15 years and have worked on the Kings River and the American River.

I became a therapist after starting my work as an emergency response advocate, where I supported individuals and families during some of their most difficult moments. Over time, I realized my true calling was in helping people not just survive those experiences, but heal from them, and that’s what led me to the deeper, ongoing work of therapy.
