What’s the First Step to Getting Help for Teen Depression in Fresno?

If you think your teen may be struggling with depression, it can be difficult to know where to begin. Many parents notice subtle changes first, withdrawal, irritability, declining grades, or a loss of interest in things their child once enjoyed, and wonder if it’s just a phase or something more serious.

Depression is not a personal failure or a parenting mistake. It’s a serious mental health condition that affects how a person feels, thinks, and functions in daily life. The good news is that effective, compassionate depression treatment in Fresno is available, and getting started doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

Don’t wait for symptoms to worsen—connect with Vitalize to learn what support options are available for your teen.

Recognizing When Depression May Be Present

Depression in teens doesn’t always look like sadness. It can show up as anger, shutdown, or chronic exhaustion. Common depression symptoms include:

  • Persistent sadness or emotional numbness
  • Loss of interest in activities or relationships
  • Sleep disturbances or appetite changes
  • Difficulty concentrating or declining school performance
  • Feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness
  • Increased isolation or withdrawal
  • Thoughts of self-harm or wanting to disappear

Conditions like major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, or other mood disorders can affect teens differently. Depression may also occur alongside anxiety disorders, trauma, ADHD, or substance use disorders, making professional evaluation especially important.

Step One: Start With a Professional Assessment

The first step toward healing is usually an initial assessment with one of our licensed mental health professionals. Corion Duran, Adolescent Clinical Director at Vitalize Behavioral Health, encourages families not to overthink that first move. “The first step is simple — give us a call. Reach out, and we’ll work to get that intake scheduled as soon as possible,” he says.

This evaluation helps clarify what your teen is experiencing and whether symptoms point to clinical depression or another mental health condition.

During the assessment, clinicians may explore:

  • Emotional and behavioral patterns
  • School stress, peer relationships, or bullying
  • Family history and major life changes
  • Sleep, appetite, and energy levels
  • Safety concerns, including suicidal thoughts
  • Prior therapy or medication use

This information helps create an individualized treatment plan—because no two teens experience depression in the same way.

“If we think IOP or PHP is the right level of support,” Duran explains, “we can often get teens started the same week — sometimes even the next day.”

Step Two: Understand Treatment Options in Fresno

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to treating depression. The right level of mental health treatment depends on symptom severity, safety, and how much depression is affecting daily functioning.

Outpatient Therapy

Many teens begin with weekly therapy, focusing on coping skills, emotional expression, and reframing negative thought patterns. Evidence-based approaches like CBT and DBT are commonly used to help regulate mood and improve emotional well-being.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

When weekly sessions aren’t enough, intensive outpatient programs provide structured therapy several times a week. IOP allows teens to maintain routines while receiving more consistent support through group therapy, individual therapy, and family involvement.

Vitalize Behavioral Health offers an IOP for individuals struggling with depression or co-occurring disorders, providing a supportive environment without hospitalization.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

For teens with more severe symptoms, a partial hospitalization program offers full-day care while allowing individuals to return home in the evenings. PHP participants typically attend sessions for several hours a day, five days a week, focusing on intensive therapeutic interventions and medical supervision.

Inpatient or Residential Treatment

In cases of severe depression, safety concerns, or treatment-resistant depression, inpatient treatment or residential treatment may be necessary.

What Treatment Often Includes

Effective personalized depression treatment often combines multiple supports, such as:

  • Evidence-based therapies (CBT, DBT)
  • Medication management to address chemical imbalances
  • Group therapy to reduce isolation and build peer support
  • Family therapy to improve communication and strengthen relationships
  • Coping strategies for stress and emotional regulation
  • Holistic approaches like mindfulness and lifestyle changes

Programs focus not just on symptom reduction, but on improving overall well-being, school functioning, and relationships.

Why Early Help Matters

Untreated depression can impact relationships, academic performance, and long-term mental health. Early intervention helps reduce symptoms, build resilience, and support healthier development.

According to national data, depression is one of the most common mental health conditions in the U.S., and recognizing the signs early can significantly improve outcomes.

If your teen is in immediate danger or experiencing suicidal thoughts, contacting the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is essential.

Clinical Director

I am a client-centered and ACT-focused clinician with a significant history working with children and adolescents. I deeply believe that therapy needs to be driven by the people we are working with, in order to achieve their own unique goals and personal ideals in regards to what they want their lives to be.

Areas of Specialization

  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • LGBTQ+
  • Children and Adolescents

Therapeutic Approach

I was trained as a person centered therapist through my graduate program and quickly gravitated towards acceptance and commitment therapy, which is a third wave behavioral therapy that focuses on acceptance of emotions and thoughts, coping effectively and committing to living our lives by our own values and ideals. I also utilize play therapy with younger clients that allows them to explore and process their emotions and struggles through a developmentally appropriate process. What clients can expect more than anything else is receiving therapy that is tailored to their needs. This would include exploring what gets in the way of them living how they want in a deep, meaningful way, developing skills and strategies that are tailored to their experience, and moving in a significant way towards the behaviors and goals they desire for themselves.

Education and Credentials

  • B.A. Psychology
  • M.S. Counseling
  • Marriage Family and Child Counseling, LMFT
  • Trained in Affirmative Therapy, Trauma-Informed Care, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

About Me

Primarily I gravitated towards becoming a therapist as I grew up with family members who needed mental health care in significant ways and I saw first hand how good, quality care benefitted them. I also attended therapy as a child and teenager and will be forever grateful that I saw competent, ethical therapists. Beyond that I am also a lifelong athlete who has seen the benefits of sports and meaningful experiences on people’s lives. I have been a whitewater river raft guide for the past 15 years and have worked on the Kings River and the American River.
