What Should You Expect During Your First Medication Management Appointment?

During your first medication management appointment, a psychiatric provider will learn about your symptoms, health history, previous treatment, and goals before discussing

During your first medication management appointment, a psychiatric provider will learn about your symptoms, health history, previous treatment, and goals before discussing whether medication may be helpful. The visit is a collaborative evaluation, not a guarantee that you will leave with a prescription.

Knowing what to expect at a first medication management appointment can make the process feel less intimidating and help you arrive prepared to participate in your care.

Bring your questions, concerns, and treatment history to Vitalize, where medication decisions begin with a thoughtful conversation about your whole health.

Your First Appointment in Five Steps

  • You will describe your symptoms and how they affect daily life.
  • The provider will review your physical and mental health history.
  • You will discuss previous medications, benefits, and side effects.
  • The provider will explain possible treatment options.
  • You will leave with next steps, which may include medication or further evaluation.

Before the Visit: What Should You Bring?

Bring a complete list of medications, vitamins, supplements, allergies, and previous psychiatric treatments. Include prescription and over-the-counter products because they may affect which medications can be used safely.

It may also help to write down:

  • Your current symptoms
  • When the symptoms began
  • Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy
  • Previous diagnoses
  • Medications you have tried
  • Side effects or allergic reactions
  • Relevant family medical history
  • Questions you want answered

MedlinePlus recommends preparing a medication list and written questions before health care appointments so important details are not forgotten.

The Conversation Usually Begins With Your Story

The provider will ask how you have been feeling and how your symptoms affect work, school, relationships, routines, and overall functioning. You may discuss anxiety, mood changes, concentration, sleep, trauma, substance use, or other concerns.

There are no “correct” answers. Honest information helps the provider understand what is happening and determine whether medication, therapy, or another form of support may be appropriate.

Vitalize’s outpatient psychiatry and medication management begins with an evaluation designed to guide an individualized treatment plan.

Why Will the Provider Ask About Physical Health?

Physical health matters because medical conditions and medications can influence mental health symptoms and treatment choices. The provider may ask about heart health, blood pressure, pregnancy, chronic illnesses, sleep, substance use, and recent laboratory testing.

They may also review potential interactions between a psychiatric medication and other medicines or supplements. In some situations, additional testing or coordination with another medical provider may be recommended.

Will You Receive a Prescription That Day?

You may receive a prescription during the first appointment, but medication is not automatically prescribed. The provider may need more information, medical records, laboratory results, or time to consider different options.

When medication is recommended, you should receive an explanation of:

  • What the medication is intended to treat
  • How and when to take it
  • Common or serious side effects
  • Possible medication interactions
  • When improvement may begin
  • What to do if you miss a dose
  • When to contact the provider

The FDA emphasizes that patients and providers should weigh a medication’s potential benefits and risks together.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Leave

Ask enough questions to understand the plan and feel comfortable carrying it out. Useful questions include:

  • Why are you recommending this medication?
  • Are there alternatives?
  • What side effects should I watch for?
  • How will we know whether it is working?
  • What should I avoid while taking it?
  • Should I continue my current medications?
  • What symptoms require an urgent call?
  • When should I return?

A medication appointment should feel collaborative. Your preferences, previous experiences, and concerns belong in the decision.

What Happens After the First Appointment?

Follow-up appointments track symptoms, side effects, and progress after the initial evaluation. The provider may continue the medication, adjust the dose, recommend a different option, or incorporate other treatment.

Medication is often one part of a broader plan that may include therapy, lifestyle support, or a structured program such as Vitalize’s Intensive Outpatient Program or Virtual IOP

Do not stop or change a psychiatric medication without first speaking with the prescribing provider unless you are instructed to seek emergency help.

Start With an Informed Conversation

Your first appointment is an opportunity to describe what you have been experiencing, understand your choices, and begin developing a plan. You don’t need to arrive knowing which medication you want or whether medication is right for you.

Schedule a conversation with Vitalize Behavioral Health and take the first step toward a medication plan shaped by your needs, questions, and goals.

Clinical Director

I am a client-centered and ACT-focused clinician with a significant history working with children and adolescents. I deeply believe that therapy needs to be driven by the people we are working with, in order to achieve their own unique goals and personal ideals in regards to what they want their lives to be.

Areas of Specialization

  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • LGBTQ+
  • Children and Adolescents

Therapeutic Approach

I was trained as a person centered therapist through my graduate program and quickly gravitated towards acceptance and commitment therapy, which is a third wave behavioral therapy that focuses on acceptance of emotions and thoughts, coping effectively and committing to living our lives by our own values and ideals. I also utilize play therapy with younger clients that allows them to explore and process their emotions and struggles through a developmentally appropriate process. What clients can expect more than anything else is receiving therapy that is tailored to their needs. This would include exploring what gets in the way of them living how they want in a deep, meaningful way, developing skills and strategies that are tailored to their experience, and moving in a significant way towards the behaviors and goals they desire for themselves.

Education and Credentials

  • B.A. Psychology
  • M.S. Counseling
  • Marriage Family and Child Counseling, LMFT
  • Trained in Affirmative Therapy, Trauma-Informed Care, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

About Me

Primarily I gravitated towards becoming a therapist as I grew up with family members who needed mental health care in significant ways and I saw first hand how good, quality care benefitted them. I also attended therapy as a child and teenager and will be forever grateful that I saw competent, ethical therapists. Beyond that I am also a lifelong athlete who has seen the benefits of sports and meaningful experiences on people’s lives. I have been a whitewater river raft guide for the past 15 years and have worked on the Kings River and the American River.

I became a therapist after starting my work as an emergency response advocate, where I supported individuals and families during some of their most difficult moments. Over time, I realized my true calling was in helping people not just survive those experiences, but heal from them, and that’s what led me to the deeper, ongoing work of therapy.
