What Is a Partial Hospitalization Program and Who Is It Designed For?

A partial hospitalization program is a structured, full-day mental health program for people who need more support than outpatient therapy

A partial hospitalization program is a structured, full-day mental health program for people who need more support than outpatient therapy or IOP but do not require overnight hospitalization. Participants receive intensive treatment during the day and return home afterward.

A partial hospitalization program in Fresno can help someone stabilize worsening symptoms, transition out of inpatient care, or avoid hospitalization while remaining connected to family and home life.

Not sure whether PHP offers the right amount of support? Explore Vitalize’s treatment options and get guidance based on your current needs.

PHP Basics at a Glance

  • PHP provides full-day treatment without overnight stays.
  • It offers more clinical support and treatment hours than IOP.
  • Participants must be stable enough to return home after programming.
  • PHP may help with depression, anxiety, trauma, bipolar disorder, and other conditions.
  • An assessment determines whether PHP is the safest and most appropriate option.

What Does a Partial Hospitalization Program Include?

A PHP includes several hours of structured treatment on most weekdays. Programming may combine:

  • Group therapy
  • Individual therapy
  • Psychiatric care
  • Medication management
  • Family involvement
  • Coping-skills education
  • Emotional regulation practice
  • Treatment and discharge planning

Vitalize’s Partial Hospitalization Program provides a higher level of care while allowing participants to return home each evening.

Who Is PHP Designed For?

PHP is designed for people with significant symptoms who need regular monitoring, structure, and clinical support but can remain safe outside treatment hours. It may be appropriate when weekly therapy or IOP has not provided enough support.

PHP may also help someone who is:

  • Transitioning home after inpatient hospitalization
  • Struggling to function at work, school, or home
  • Experiencing escalating symptoms
  • At risk of needing inpatient treatment
  • Needing coordinated therapy and psychiatric care
  • Stable enough to sleep at home without 24-hour supervision

How Is PHP Different From IOP?

PHP is more intensive than IOP because it involves longer and more frequent treatment days. IOP generally meets several days per week for a few hours, while PHP commonly provides full-day programming five or more days per week.

Someone who has stabilized in PHP may later transition into Vitalize’s Intensive Outpatient Program for continued support with greater independence.

How Is PHP Different From Inpatient Care?

PHP does not include overnight care, while inpatient treatment provides continuous supervision in a hospital or residential setting. Inpatient care may be necessary during an immediate crisis or when someone cannot remain safe independently.

The Cleveland Clinic describes PHP as intensive day treatment for people who need more support than outpatient therapy but do not require hospitalization.

What Conditions Can PHP Help Treat?

PHP can help treat mental health conditions that significantly interfere with daily functioning, including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Mood instability
  • Co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns

Treatment is individualized because symptoms, safety needs, and recovery goals differ from person to person.

How Do You Know Whether PHP Is Right for You?

You determine whether PHP is appropriate through a clinical assessment. The care team considers symptom severity, safety, treatment history, current functioning, medication needs, and support at home.

The recommendation may be PHP, IOP, inpatient treatment, psychiatric care, or standard outpatient therapy. The goal is to provide enough support without placing someone in a more restrictive setting than necessary.

Clinical Director

I am a client-centered and ACT-focused clinician with a significant history working with children and adolescents. I deeply believe that therapy needs to be driven by the people we are working with, in order to achieve their own unique goals and personal ideals in regards to what they want their lives to be.

Areas of Specialization

  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • LGBTQ+
  • Children and Adolescents

Therapeutic Approach

I was trained as a person centered therapist through my graduate program and quickly gravitated towards acceptance and commitment therapy, which is a third wave behavioral therapy that focuses on acceptance of emotions and thoughts, coping effectively and committing to living our lives by our own values and ideals. I also utilize play therapy with younger clients that allows them to explore and process their emotions and struggles through a developmentally appropriate process. What clients can expect more than anything else is receiving therapy that is tailored to their needs. This would include exploring what gets in the way of them living how they want in a deep, meaningful way, developing skills and strategies that are tailored to their experience, and moving in a significant way towards the behaviors and goals they desire for themselves.

Education and Credentials

  • B.A. Psychology
  • M.S. Counseling
  • Marriage Family and Child Counseling, LMFT
  • Trained in Affirmative Therapy, Trauma-Informed Care, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

About Me

Primarily I gravitated towards becoming a therapist as I grew up with family members who needed mental health care in significant ways and I saw first hand how good, quality care benefitted them. I also attended therapy as a child and teenager and will be forever grateful that I saw competent, ethical therapists. Beyond that I am also a lifelong athlete who has seen the benefits of sports and meaningful experiences on people’s lives. I have been a whitewater river raft guide for the past 15 years and have worked on the Kings River and the American River.

I became a therapist after starting my work as an emergency response advocate, where I supported individuals and families during some of their most difficult moments. Over time, I realized my true calling was in helping people not just survive those experiences, but heal from them, and that’s what led me to the deeper, ongoing work of therapy.
