Medication management and therapy work together by addressing different parts of a mental health condition. Medication may reduce symptoms that interfere with daily functioning, while therapy helps people understand patterns, build coping skills and make lasting behavioral changes.

When coordinated thoughtfully, therapy and medication management can create a more complete treatment plan than either approach provides alone.

Treatment does not have to be an either-or decision. Explore how Vitalize combines psychiatric care with therapeutic support around your individual needs.

Two Forms of Care, One Shared Goal

  • Medication can help reduce disruptive mental health symptoms.
  • Therapy addresses thoughts, emotions, behaviors and relationships.
  • Regular communication helps providers evaluate the entire treatment plan.
  • Medication changes should be based on symptoms, side effects and progress.
  • Combined care is personalized rather than automatically necessary for everyone.

Medication Can Create Room for Progress

Medication may reduce symptoms that make it difficult to participate fully in therapy or everyday life. Depending on the condition, it may help with mood, anxiety, concentration, sleep, intrusive thoughts or emotional instability.

For example, someone experiencing severe anxiety may understand their coping strategies but feel too overwhelmed to use them. Reducing symptom intensity can make it easier to engage in treatment and practice new responses.

Vitalize’s psychiatry and medication management services begin with an evaluation and continue through regular monitoring.

Therapy Builds Skills Medication Cannot Teach

Therapy helps people recognize patterns, process experiences and develop practical ways to respond to challenges. Medication may ease symptoms, but it cannot teach someone how to set boundaries, communicate needs or challenge an unhelpful belief.

Therapy may address:

  • Coping with intense emotions
  • Reducing avoidance
  • Improving relationships
  • Processing trauma
  • Changing harmful thought patterns
  • Building healthier routines
  • Preparing for future stressors

These skills can continue supporting recovery even as medication needs change.

The Real Benefit Comes From Coordination

Coordination helps therapists and prescribing providers understand how each part of treatment is affecting the other. A therapist may notice changes in energy, mood or participation, while a medication provider can evaluate whether those changes relate to treatment, side effects or the underlying condition.

A meta-analysis of 52 studies found that combining psychotherapy with antidepressant medication produced better outcomes than medication alone for major depression, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, the most appropriate approach still depends on the person and diagnosis.

Vitalize may coordinate these services within its Intensive Outpatient Program and other structured levels of care.

What Information Should You Share With Each Provider?

Tell both providers about meaningful changes in symptoms, sleep, appetite, energy, concentration and daily functioning. They should also know about new medications, supplements, substance use and physical health concerns.

Useful updates include:

  • A symptom becoming better or worse
  • New or disruptive side effects
  • Difficulty taking medication consistently
  • Increased anxiety, agitation or hopelessness
  • Changes noticed by family members
  • New stressors affecting treatment
  • Thoughts of self-harm or other urgent safety concerns

Don’t assume one provider has automatically received information from the other. Ask how communication and consent will be handled.

How Will You Know Whether the Plan Is Helping?

The plan is helping when symptoms and daily functioning improve in measurable ways. Progress may look like sleeping more consistently, missing fewer workdays, reconnecting with others or using coping skills before distress escalates.

Follow-up appointments allow the medication provider to evaluate effectiveness and side effects. Therapy sessions provide space to examine whether emotional, behavioral and relationship patterns are changing.

Research has also found that combined treatment can improve functioning and quality of life for some people with depression compared with either treatment alone.

Does Everyone Need Both Treatments?

No, not everyone needs both medication and therapy. Some people respond well to therapy alone, while others benefit primarily from medication or another service.

The decision depends on the diagnosis, symptom severity, previous treatment, personal preferences and overall health. Someone who needs more frequent therapeutic support may also consider Vitalize’s Virtual IOP

Bring the Pieces of Care Together

Therapy and medication management are most effective when they support the same goals rather than operating as disconnected services. Open communication allows the treatment team to respond when symptoms, side effects or priorities change.

Ask Vitalize how coordinated psychiatric and therapeutic care could help you build a treatment plan that supports both symptom relief and lasting progress.

Clinical Director

I am a client-centered and ACT-focused clinician with a significant history working with children and adolescents. I deeply believe that therapy needs to be driven by the people we are working with, in order to achieve their own unique goals and personal ideals in regards to what they want their lives to be.

Areas of Specialization

  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • LGBTQ+
  • Children and Adolescents

Therapeutic Approach

I was trained as a person centered therapist through my graduate program and quickly gravitated towards acceptance and commitment therapy, which is a third wave behavioral therapy that focuses on acceptance of emotions and thoughts, coping effectively and committing to living our lives by our own values and ideals. I also utilize play therapy with younger clients that allows them to explore and process their emotions and struggles through a developmentally appropriate process. What clients can expect more than anything else is receiving therapy that is tailored to their needs. This would include exploring what gets in the way of them living how they want in a deep, meaningful way, developing skills and strategies that are tailored to their experience, and moving in a significant way towards the behaviors and goals they desire for themselves.

Education and Credentials

  • B.A. Psychology
  • M.S. Counseling
  • Marriage Family and Child Counseling, LMFT
  • Trained in Affirmative Therapy, Trauma-Informed Care, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

About Me

Primarily I gravitated towards becoming a therapist as I grew up with family members who needed mental health care in significant ways and I saw first hand how good, quality care benefitted them. I also attended therapy as a child and teenager and will be forever grateful that I saw competent, ethical therapists. Beyond that I am also a lifelong athlete who has seen the benefits of sports and meaningful experiences on people’s lives. I have been a whitewater river raft guide for the past 15 years and have worked on the Kings River and the American River.

REGIONAL CLINICAL DIRECTOR

As the Regional Clinical Director of the Adult IOP/PHP program, I bring over three years of experience in intensive outpatient care and six years in crisis intervention and emergency response alongside law enforcement. My clinical work is grounded in a psychodynamic approach through a trauma-informed lens, with a focus on helping clients understand how their past informs their present functioning. I became a therapist after starting my work as an emergency response advocate, where I supported individuals and families during some of their most difficult moments. Over time, I realized my true calling was in helping people not just survive those experiences, but heal from them, and that’s what led me to the deeper, ongoing work of therapy.
