Here’s How Gen Z Is Normalizing Mental Health Conversations (And How We Can Learn From Them)

For Gen Z, mental health isn’t a hush-hush topic or a hidden struggle—it’s part of the conversation. Whether they’re posting

For Gen Z, mental health isn’t a hush-hush topic or a hidden struggle—it’s part of the conversation. Whether they’re posting about anxiety and depression, sharing therapy experiences on digital platforms, or creating memes about mental health struggles, Gen Z individuals are breaking the stigma and pushing mental health awareness to the forefront in a way no other generation has done before.

At Vitalize Behavioral Health, we believe there’s a lot to learn from Generation Z’s mental health movement—especially when it comes to how they talk about, seek help for, and prioritize their mental well-being.

Join the conversation and take the first step toward better mental health—schedule an appointment with Vitalize today.

Gen Z Grew Up Talking About Mental Health Online

Unlike older generations, Gen Z adolescents grew up immersed in digital platforms and online interactions. Many of their earliest conversations about mental health issues happened not in a doctor’s office, but on social media apps like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. These platforms provided more than just entertainment; they became spaces for mental health support, storytelling, and connection.

According to recent mental health statistics, high school students and young adults are more likely than any other age group to talk about mental health challenges online. And as the youth mental health crisis continues to grow, fueled by factors like the global pandemic, systemic racism, climate change, and gun violence, talking openly has become a lifeline.

How Social Media Is Shaping Youth Mental Health

Gen Z and mental health are deeply intertwined, especially through the lens of social media. These platforms have been used to discuss everything from substance abuse and self-injury to eating disorders and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), turning the internet into an informal system of mental health care and peer support.

These conversations have helped:

  • Reduce stigma surrounding mental illness and mental health conditions
  • Empower young people to seek professional care earlier
  • Increase access to mental health awareness and education
  • Promote self-care and emotional resilience

Still, there’s a complicated relationship between social media and mental well-being. While platforms can foster connection, they can also become spaces of social isolation, comparison, and negatively influence content, especially for young women.

What Gen Z Is Doing Right

Despite facing more mental health challenges, Gen Z’s response is both powerful and hopeful. Here’s what Gen Z and mental health leaders are doing right:

  1. Talking about it early and often. From group chats to high school clubs, mental health concerns are part of everyday conversation.
  2. Sharing real experiences. Whether medically diagnosed with a mental health condition or simply navigating stress, they speak openly.
  3. Seeking support. More young adults are using professional mental health services than ever before.
  4. Setting boundaries. Many are prioritizing self-care, unplugging from screens, and addressing their mental health struggles with intention.
  5. Normalizing therapy. Mental health care is no longer viewed as a last resort, but as preventive, supportive, and essential.

This isn’t just about trends—it’s about reshaping how we view and respond to a mental health crisis that impacts every generation.

How We Can Support Gen Z—And Follow Their Lead

If you’re a parent, teacher, mentor, or healthcare provider, you have a role in responding to the youth mental health crisis. Here’s how you can support Gen Z’s approach to mental health:

  • Create safe spaces for honest, vulnerable conversation
  • Engage in active listening without judgment
  • Address your own biases around mental health problems
  • Model healthy behaviors around screen time, physical health, and mental well-being
  • Connect teens with trusted mental health professionals

And don’t forget: mental health challenges aren’t exclusive to the young. While Gen Z mental health is often spotlighted, every generation can benefit from mental health services and human services that promote healing and connection.

Clinical Director

I am a client-centered and ACT-focused clinician with a significant history working with children and adolescents. I deeply believe that therapy needs to be driven by the people we are working with, in order to achieve their own unique goals and personal ideals in regards to what they want their lives to be.

Areas of Specialization

  • Trauma
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • LGBTQ+
  • Children and Adolescents

Therapeutic Approach

I was trained as a person centered therapist through my graduate program and quickly gravitated towards acceptance and commitment therapy, which is a third wave behavioral therapy that focuses on acceptance of emotions and thoughts, coping effectively and committing to living our lives by our own values and ideals. I also utilize play therapy with younger clients that allows them to explore and process their emotions and struggles through a developmentally appropriate process. What clients can expect more than anything else is receiving therapy that is tailored to their needs. This would include exploring what gets in the way of them living how they want in a deep, meaningful way, developing skills and strategies that are tailored to their experience, and moving in a significant way towards the behaviors and goals they desire for themselves.

Education and Credentials

  • B.A. Psychology
  • M.S. Counseling
  • Marriage Family and Child Counseling, LMFT
  • Trained in Affirmative Therapy, Trauma-Informed Care, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

About Me

Primarily I gravitated towards becoming a therapist as I grew up with family members who needed mental health care in significant ways and I saw first hand how good, quality care benefitted them. I also attended therapy as a child and teenager and will be forever grateful that I saw competent, ethical therapists. Beyond that I am also a lifelong athlete who has seen the benefits of sports and meaningful experiences on people’s lives. I have been a whitewater river raft guide for the past 15 years and have worked on the Kings River and the American River.

I became a therapist after starting my work as an emergency response advocate, where I supported individuals and families during some of their most difficult moments. Over time, I realized my true calling was in helping people not just survive those experiences, but heal from them, and that’s what led me to the deeper, ongoing work of therapy.
